In my mid 30s, about 1 year after the birth of my second child, I noticed something strange.
I was waking up very tired most mornings even after a full 8 hours sleep. My body wasn’t snapping back, somehow I had moved from Jean size 10 to 12 all thanks to my mid section (Mom pouch) that kept increase despite the fact that I check calories and move my body regularly. My moods? Let’s just say my family learned to read my facial expressions before speaking to me . One minute I am smiling, the next I am feeling irritable, or crying or isolating myself. It was just a whole lot. Little tasks became overwhelming, I developed anxiety, It felt like I was going crazy.
I kept telling myself, “It’s just stress, maybe I’m getting older” lol but deep down, I knew something wasn’t right.
That’s when I discovered the real culprit: my hormones were out of balance.
Now here’s the thing, if you’re a woman 35 and above, this could be happening to you too. Our bodies go through subtle but powerful hormonal shifts at this stage of life, and if we ignore the signs, they can snowball into bigger health challenges.
So, let’s talk about the 7 most common signs that shows your hormones may be waving the red flag and what you can start doing today to get back on track.
⸻
1. Persistent Fatigue
If you’re dragging yourself through the day, yawning at 10am, and counting down the hours until bedtime, it’s not “just being busy.” Hormonal dips especially in thyroid, estrogen, and progesterone can zap your energy no matter how much you sleep.
⸻
2. Unexplained Weight Gain (or Loss)
Have you noticed stubborn belly fat that won’t respond to dieting and/or exercising? Or sudden weight changes without changing your diet or routine? Hormonal imbalances can affect how your body stores and burns fat especially around the midsection.
⸻
3. Mood Swings & Anxiety
If you find yourself easily irritable and snapping at loved ones, feeling unusually weepy, or experiencing random waves of anxiety, fluctuating estrogen and progesterone could be behind it.
⸻
4. Sleep Issues
Tossing and turning, unable to go to sleep, waking up at 3am, or lying awake with your mind racing? Hormones like cortisol and melatonin play a huge role in restful sleep. When they’re out of sync, your nights suffer.
⸻
5. Irregular Periods or Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) Changes
Heavier flow, more cramps, skipped cycles, missed cycles, or shorter cycles, these shifts are your body’s way of saying, “Hey, something’s changing here.”
⸻
6. Low Libido
Have you noticed a loss of interest attributed to “just being tired”? Low estrogen, testosterone, or progesterone levels can all affect desire and intimacy.
⸻
7. Brain Fog
That “walking into a room and forgetting why” feeling? Or trouble focusing at work? Your brain loves balanced hormones and when those hormones are off, your mental clarity takes a hit.
⸻
So, What Can You Do?
Your body is simply out of balance and balance can be restored.
Here are 3 small but powerful changes you can start today:
Eat for hormone health : Include colorful vegetables (Spinach, Kale, Broccoli, Carrot, Sweet potatoes, Purple cabbage, Beets), healthy fats (Avocado, Olive oil, Nuts, Salmon) and quality protein (Chicken, Greek yogurt, Eggs) in every meal.
Manage stress like it’s a priority : Yoga, deep breathing, prayer, or even a simple daily walk can help regulate cortisol.
Prioritize sleep : Your body repairs and regulates hormones while you rest, so protect your bedtime like an appointment.
